Move Networks Announces Strategic Partnership with Microsoft

Today Move Networks announced plans to integrate the Move media player with Microsoft’s Silverlight technology.  Because of this integration, developers (and viewers) will enjoy greater flexibility and quality in their streaming video.

Microsoft Silverlight, a cross-browser, multiplatform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web, will now integrate Move Networks’ video streaming technology that allows videos to start faster, play smoothly with no buffering, and deliver high quality video resolution.

As online video usage continues to grow exponentially, Move Networks’ technology combined with Microsoft Silverlight’s open, flexible development platform will give media companies and developers the ability to quickly develop and deploy unique online television offerings. Within one environment, developers will be able to seamlessly integrate unique branding and navigational elements within, around and on top of the highest quality online video on the net.

We are excited to push the boundaries of online video streaming!  The announcement was made today at MIX and on Microsoft’s site

So, does this mean that Move will be incorporating VC-1 into the Move player or will you continue to use the VP7 codec from On2 and integrate it into a ’skinned’ player where the controls/navigation are functional properties of a silverlight browser, but still using the VP7 codec?

Thanks for the question. Move Networks will continue to use On2’s VP7. In the future we will also support other standard codecs. Our modular architecture allows us to provide future support for codecs like VC-1 and H.264. Move’s goal will always be to align our technologies with the demands and needs of our publishers and programmers.

John, thanks for the answer. So, as I understand it then, there’s probably never going to be 1 ‘clear winner’ when it comes to the overall predominant codec for all internet video… after all different bandwidths and different platforms require different efficiencies and different overall levels of quality. However, in regards to Move and the evolution of your players and codec usage, is it an accurate understanding that although Move may add “future support for codecs like VC-1 and H-264″ that ultimately the output codec would be VP7 and that your future work will focus on finding ways to transcode othercodecs into VP7 to take advantage of it’s efficiency over lower bandwidths? Also, from Move’s perception, how will you be addressing the evolving field of Mobile Video? Do you see a ‘Mobile Move’ product coming soon? Thanks again for your comments.

Why am I now seeing “Adobe Flash Player Settings” when I right click what used to be your player. You didn’t sell out to “the man” I hope??? I was really impressed with your move player, but Flash Player stinks on PCs. Don’t waste your great technology it was awsome!

John, Thanks for your comment. You may have right-clicked the player during an ad; in some cases during ads, the Move player is hidden and the Flash player displays the ad. Flash may also be used around the Move Media Player to display other items on the Web page: controls, banner ads, images, etc. Additionally, each individual media publisher designs and develops their own player for delivering Move-encoded video, and they may develop it using Flash or HTTP. Check out the Move Networks Showcase Player (find the link on our homepage) to see some of the unique options available for player design and development.

Scott, When I say that we may add future support for codecs like VC-1 and H-264, I mean that we will support those codecs in addition to VP7. As far as addressing the field of mobile video, our technology is ready for it. Stay tuned to see which broadcasters use Move-encoded mobile video.

Make sure this runs on Macs.

Everything Microsoft does, in time, usually stops supporting Macs. MSIE and Windows Media Player to name a few cross platform programs that are no longer supported.

Wow – CEO answering the Message Boards? Respect John. Looking forward to meeting the team.
