NFL Touts High-Def Game Replays

Sports Business Journal | January 5, 2009

The NFL is preparing a significant marketing push this month for Game Rewind, its new high-definition online game replay service.

The subscription-based product, which made its debut early last month, marks an extension of Game Pass, its existing TV replay offering. The online product is designed, in part, to achieve several key goals for the league: further establish NFL.com as the leading destination for online football video, continue testing on higher-resolution video online that is only now beginning to reach substantial numbers of people, and increase subscription revenue for the league during what has become a turbulent period for advertising of all forms.

The product is sold either as a $19.99 season pass that runs through March 30, or for $4.99 a week. The full-length video replays are shown commercial-free and are blacked out while any other NFL games are in play. A mosaic feature offers simultaneous viewing of up to four games, and statistics and chat functions are embedded into the video player. Aiding the league on the effort are NeuLion and Move Networks Inc.

Networks and leagues hope hi-def streaming boosts viewing times and revenue

Ten years after U.S. networks began producing major league sports coverage in high-definition, HD sports has become ubiquitous. Now, networks and sports leagues are looking to bring the same experience to the Web by stepping up the quality of their online streaming, including the production of live HD streams for sports such as college football and basketball. The belief is that delivering higher-quality video will lead to longer viewing times and thus boost Web advertising and/or subscription revenues.

Streaming Media | December 11, 2008

Today, the NFL launched a new video on-demand service called Game Rewind that lets you watch every NFL game in HD quality, with no commercials. The service, which costs $19.99 for the season or $4.99 for a week pass, also provides DVR functionality and lets you watch up to four games at once. While it is not known exactly how quickly games are made available after they end, for now the NFL is saying within 24 hours, but it is expected times will be much shorter.

The NFL is using Move Networks for the service, which is the same technology partner used for the NFL’s live video service called GamePass HD, available to those outside the U.S. As expected, the quality of video for Game Rewind is amazing and the NFL kept the interface clean and simple.

NFL.com’s “Game Rewind” Feature Is Pretty Cool

VideoNuze | December 12, 2008

I got a tip yesterday about “Game Rewind,” a feature that NFL.com has apparently launched in the last week or so. For a mere $20/season, you can now watch full, commercial-free replays of all the season’s games. The video is delivered in terrific quality by Move Networks, and as seen below, also offers a side window that shows a synopsis of the game’s scoring. I’m not a huge football fan, but since I missed the exciting end of last week’s Patriots-Seahawks game, I simply dragged to the fourth quarter and sat back and enjoyed (btw, how nice is it to watch commercial-free?!).
