Next Wednesday (October 22), the Metropolitan Opera will begin streaming performances online, on a pay per view and subscription basis.
Of course, we love the idea, and wish them nothing but success. We do see their approach as a mixed bag, however.
On the plus side, they’re using the Move Networks player. Regardless of the occasional glitch that will inevitably happen when live streaming an event, we have been undoubtedly impressed with Move’s solutions, and consider their player to be the best on the market. Hands down.

Online television technology provider Move Networks said it will deliver more than 400 live Internet television events this month. Wouldn’t it be great if that included live streams of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “iCarly,” “The Office,” “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” “The Daily Show,” “Entourage” and “Californication”?
Wait, sorry, that was the lack of cable talking.
As many of you know, the polls are showing that readers who favor me ditching cable, satellite and over-the-air programming for one month in favor of broadband-only delivery of TV are way ahead. So I’m mentally prepping to live a cable programming-free life.
In the meantime, though, Move Networks said it delivered more than 105 live events to Internet TV viewers for the weekend of Oct. 3, comprising 3 million hours with an average of 81 minutes per viewer.

Gotuit Media—a company that offers metadata technologies which, among other things, allow end-users to instantly access the parts of a piece of video that interest them, and which can also be used by video publishers to allow end-users to make mash-ups out of their content (note: earlier this year, the company filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming that the latter’s Silverlight technology infringes on its patents)—and Move Networks—a Utah-based company which offers patent-pending technologies for delivering live and on-demand HD-quality broadband video (its technologies are used by, among others, ABC, Discovery Communications, ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros.)—have formed an integration partnership and deployed a solution with their first joint-customer: XONtv, a broadband video portal that offers several thousand hours of outdoors-related programming.

Microsoft Communications was showcasing its cross-browser video platform, Silverlight, at IBC to demonstrate some of the benefits of its deepening strategic partnership with Move Networks, a supplier of high-definition video-delivery technology.
Move is, in a sense, a rival to Brightcove and has a competing adaptive streaming technology which underpinned its collaboration with the Silverlight platform this summer for US network NBC’s online Olympics coverage.
This allows on-the-fly switching between 15 different possible video-bit rates, by pre-caching two-second chunks of video across different parts of the network. Move’s heuristics decide at two-second intervals what the network conditions are and accordingly what data-rate the player should be running the video at. As in Brightcove’s case, the aim is to prevent skipping or discontinuities in the video, by allowing ‘graceful degradation’ to take place between one level of picture quality and the next one up or down.

The first of a weekly series of broadcasts on March 3 which drew 800,000 viewers from 139 countries was made possible by a Utah company, Move Networks Inc., which has quickly made itself into a leader in broadcasting television over the Internet.
Incorporated only two years ago, the company with headquarters in American Fork has developed cutting-edge technology that smooths the flow of television signals to computer screens and makes possible high-quality broadcasts.
