“Adaptive bit-rate streaming” is becoming a hot buzz phrase in the world of online video. At the Future of Television conference in New York this week, executives from Brightcove and Lycos each touted new streaming platforms that incorporate adaptive bit-rate technology, which responds to fluctuations in the end user’s available bandwidth by adjusting the bit-rate of the stream—and thus the quality of the image—up or down as needed.
